    Best Hand Wins

    Or does it ?

Interesting scenario described below... What is the correct outcome ??

Live game no limit holdem, Player A and Player B get to showdown.

Player A Declares " I have a straight", as he shows his hole cards face up. Player B shakes his head, makes a forward movement and passes his hole cards face down over the betting line..
Player A yells "ship it", as the dealer gathers all the chips..

Player B looks down and see's that player A does not have a straight, (He has made a mistake) and only has 2 pair.

Player B then announces to the dealer that Player A only has 2 pair, and that he (Player B) has a higher 2 pair so should be declared the winner...

The Shift manager is summoned to the table to adudicate..

    Who wins, and why ?

It depends where you play. Most places I've played, The cards are retrievable if not pulled into the muck by the dealer. From my experience, as long as the cards don't touch the muck, player b is the winner.

Always wise to check the declared winners cards before you let go of yours. Rules change everywhere you play, but a majority of casinos allow the cards to be retrieved as long as they don't hit the muck.

By passing his cards face down over the betting line, I assume that means Player B has mucked his hand. At that point Player A is the only live hand left in the pot and he wins. Now if Player B was still holding on to his cards (i.e. he has them in his hand as he passes his hand over the betting line, but does not release the cards), his hand would still be live and he could turn it face up for the win. Or if Player B had simply mucked his cards face up, I believe the shift manager would declare his hand the winner... but once they get mucked face down, the hand is dead and gone...
