the only sure way to prevent bad beats is to always get your money in behind

but on a more serious note, avoiding pre flop all ins is a good start, every time you leave it to the deck, you've put your fate in the hands of the draw rather than in your skill as a player

I totally agree with you on that one Curt. The biggest mistake I've made recently was at a live cash game with 2/2 NLH. I was dealt pocket Kings UTG +2 and raised the straddle by 12. There was already $32 in the pot. I have one all-in for $16, so since that wasnt enough I've got 2 callers and one all in for a total of $64. The flop came 6d-9s-6s. Instead of check to see where my hand was I moved all in with my remaining $53. Doing this cost me a lot. I never understood why poker players calculate so much, and now I know why lol.

You can't prevent them, but you can try to limit them.

As Curt said avoiding all ins is a good way to limit them. Also understanding the situation and what draws are possible, and who likes to chase draws may help you limit your losses.

Knowing how the strength of your hand changes and then making the right play because of it is also also important. Pocket aces and pocket kings are great hands preflop in holdem, but may become easy folds by the river depending on the board and the action so far in the hand. Realizing when you're probably beat and letting go of a hand will go a long way toward improving your success.
You don't always need cards, just courage.
