They do have them up here in New York, but they're usually not great. Some places in Chinatown make it pretty well. On my one trip to New Orleans in college, I finally had three fried soft shell crabs in a po' boy and it was awesome.
I like black pugs and I cannot lie...
I grew up in a commercial fishing family. We caught em ourselves and my mom would fry them up that night, and I'm drooling thinking about them. lol Actually just mentioned them too her a couple of months ago, and then forgot all about it. We still have connections for right off the boat fresh seafood, so would love to get my hands on some when they are in season again.

Fresh soft shell crabs, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm sounds so good.
Oh yeah. Lightly floured and seasoned, then fried in butter to crisp it up just a bit, course just a sautee in butter and garlic is perfection too.

Soft shell crabs are one of my favorite things to eat.First is deviled lobster.
When I was a kid my parents had a cottage on the eastern shore.They used to send us kids out walking in the inlets with crab nets...Boy those were the days
