    Post Ufc 101

Ok so after settling in at my buddies house for a little bit of pregaming, and shooting the shit before the fight started. We finally settled down (about 10 of us) around the T.V...* Flipped on the channel and we had a screen saying the show was unavailable.* Make a long story short it turns out our other friend(4 of them live in this house) whose name the tv bill is under, has run up the bill too 790 dollars in the past 2 months(lmao).* After having a conversation with the nice lady for time warner cable, it was realized that there was an abundance of movies with names like "busty riding academy" and "pussy patrol", it appeared our dear friend had a porn problem.** Even worse we had just got fucked on watching the ufc fight! (who even buys porn these days anyway).

Anywho, i digress.* I went out to a bar where i could watch it and got there just in time too see the Griffin vs Silva bout, which was pretty much what i cared about the most.I have to say, i expected griffin to lose, but i was absolutely fucking shocked by HOW badly he got destroyed by silva.*** Seriously the punch that dislocated his jaw was thrown by silva as he was dodging and stepping backwards, just sick.** Griffin just hopping up and running out of there after that happened was pretty god damn goofy too....i was* really disappointed by the whole match, it was definatly a blow to griffin fans.****

It was a pretty disappointing night. Penn/K-Flo was the only fight worth the price of the PPV.

UFC is a bunch of crap compared to what it was 10-15 years ago.

Your probably right. I mean, as far as i saw from the two fights that i could watch, you are definatly right, but i cant judge those i missed before. I really thought K-Flo was doing such a great job, and then he just got caught-up that one time with penn on the back and it got nasty......

And Mr. Kromer as far as the old UFC being better, why do you think so?

I remember when i was like 10 and my dad would order and watch the stuff back when it had just come out in like 93-95. I wouldnt mind downloading some of those older ones actually to check it out again, and compare it too nowadays. As far as i know there were never really any big changes to the organization until it was bought in 2001 and they restructured it, right?

UFC was way different in the beginning and I think that some elements were better and some were worse. The part that always made MMA interesting to me is style vs. style. The old UFC was much more about putting a jiujitsu specialist in a ring with a shotokan specialist (entirely opposite styles) and seeing what the hell would happen between two masters of their own methods. Now, every guy wants to crosstrain before they are even borderline decent in one art and the result is a lot of mediocre fighters that all look the same. Their strengths and weaknesses may be different, but the current UFC has melded every fighter into this hybrid style with much less variation. Much less interesting in my book.

The downside was that back in the day, there were no time limits or weight classes. The no time limits thing means that cardio alone decided most fights, for better or worse and you can debate the validity of that. There were no decisions, so a guy could be getting beat pretty badly and just had to survive until his opponent was gassed. You had a lot of fights where the winner absolutely fought the worst fight and just remained standing longer than the other guy. The no weight classes things was probably dopey. In general, weight classes make for better competition and make it way easier to train properly. And if two guys are dying to fight each other, they can always make a catchweight fight. They would also have very few stoppages unless a guy was getting seriously injured.

The part that annoys me about the current UFC is the rules they stick in that really compromise the fight. The guys that dominate right now are the ones that figured out how to use the rules to their advantage instead of being the best pure fighters.

But yeah, there were a lot of bad fights. The Silva fight was basically a joke and there is nobody in the division that can touch him right now. That's not a good thing.

The Leites fight didn't make TV but was absolutely horrendous from what I've heard. The only other decent fight was Henricks/Sadollah and that was a questionable stoppage at best. Other than that, it was a lot of really boring fights with guys that make you wonder how they made it out of the gym. This is why the current UFC gets boring so fast, once you get past the elite level of fighters, most of the roster just kind of looks the same.

Basically everything spaceboy said was what I was thinking. In mid-90s, you could basically do anything except bite. Lots of extra rules now, and back then it was awesome to see a 260 lb. wrestler go against a 140 lb. martial arts expert. Loved it!

A lot of the rules don't make sense either. You are not allowed to kick a downed opponent, but you are allowed to knee, elbow, or drop punches on him. Almost anyone will tell you that a knee is much more effective than a kick there, so WTF? They also added a bunch of rules about contact to the head out of certain positions. Mostly, the rules put strikers at an unnecessary disadvantage.

I was talking with a buddy last night and he has all the UFC's on dvd from the very first.* He basically offered the same explanation that it was just tons different back in the day. And that a lot of these guys that you see rising up now arent necassarily the best they are just way ahead of the game of many fighters right now because of how they fight.** HE took the silva fight for prime example he predicted that in the next 5 years or so your gonna see a lot of that style of fighting of just continual dodging and dancing around waiting for a prime opportunity to jump in and get a precise hit at the right time.... Anywho, im gonna go ahead and borrow those dvd's and hopefully watch them before i leave

Lyoto Machida is one current guy I really like to watch. He has a distinct style that must be impossible to train for. Jujitsu meets shotokan... the guy is basically a human fortress.
