How big of balls do you have to have to call a onside kick to start the 2nd half.
Some people play hard to get, I play hard to want!
I thought that it was a great call! The Saints hadn't stopped Peyton Manning yet (seeing as his own coach stopped him on the last drive of the half), so what was the harm in giving him a slightly shorter field? Even if it didn't work out, I don't think that Sean Payton would have taken too much heat over it.
Meanwhile, as well as Drew Brees played, Garret Hartley (Saints kicker) was the real MVP of the game. He connected on 3 bombs when the Saints offense was useless otherwise AND struck that onside kick perfectly.

The difference is that the coach would have gotten nailed by the media and other short sighted people had they not have gotten it and lost. Thats why no coach in the super bowl had ever tried a non 4th quarter onside kick.

I really don't think that the media would have killed him over it. The Saints were only down by 4 at the time, but they were getting seriously outplayed, especially on defense. It would have been the difference between the Colts starting on the Saints' 40 and the Colts starting on theor won 25 and getting to the Saints' 40 one minute and four plays later.

Im not sure what media you are talking about. But I am talking about the media that put the story that this one game tarnishes Manning whole career. Yep, the media is always fair.

Greg right, the Saints were being outplayed- one terrific move
Im a Montana Grizzly fan and our old coach went 87-16 over his career but lost 3 national championship games and he is ridiculed for it by fans and media and was applauded when he took the job at UNLV. So while it may not be fair there is always going to be jerks out their.
