Maybe Rep. Wilson can raise the level of discourse even further by shouting things at the next joint session like "You're gay!", "Ohnohedidn!", and "Whatchu talkin' bout, Willis?!". Hell, let's just have some crazy guy on full-time staff that just screams random things during all of the speeches. It would certainly keep things more interesting!

The president pushes back against health care misinformation, then spreads a bunch of his own.

The lies last night began in Obama’s opening paragraph. “When I spoke here last winter,” he began, “credit was frozen. And our financial system was on the verge of collapse.” In fact, Obama spoke on Feb. 24, at least six weeks after credit markets began to thaw, and one week after he proclaimed that the passage of his $787 billion stimulus marked “the beginning of the end, the beginning of what we need to do to create jobs for Americans.” Obama’s speech that day wasn’t about staving off a collapse, it was about cleaning up the mess and tackling long-ignored issues.

The lies continued with sketchy math regarding deficits, and as for the health care bill and illegal immigrants...well, it's murky at best.

Congressional Research Service: ObamaCare will cover illegal immigrants

In what he called the “first myth” being spread by critics of his proposal for a government-run health care system, Obama said they are wrong in claiming illegal immigrants will be covered: “That is not true. Illegal immigrants would not be covered. That idea has not even been on the table.” Obama said.

“Under H.R. 3200, a ‘Health Insurance Exchange’ would begin operation in 2013 and would offer private plans alongside a public option…H.R. 3200 does not contain any restrictions on noncitzens—whether legally or illegally present, or in the United States temporarily or permanently—participating in the Exchange.”

In its subsection on health insurance subsidies (known as “affordability credits”), HR 3200 does state, “Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.” That would seem to solve the problem, but it’s more rhetoric than reality. The bill contains no verification requirement or enforcement process for citizenship or legal residency, as exists for other federal benefit programs.

sounds like the worst kind of lie to me - one that is intentionally deceptive.

It is telling that so many people who claim to be speaking on the side of Truth, Justice, and the American Way of Journalism have consistently focused their outrage-o-meters at individual townhall attendees, political broadcast entertainers, and the lesser lights of a lame (if resurgent-by-default) opposition party, while letting walk nearly fact-check-free the non-irrelevant occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. If calling out lies and misrepresentations about a significant policy proposal is such pressing journalistic business—and it should be!—you’d think the watchdogs might start with the guy doing the proposing.

vilify the opposition, jump on board with the new "one-party autocracy" thomas friedman seems to be proposing.

There is only one thing worse than one-party autocracy, and that is one-party democracy, which is what we have in America today. One-party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today, it can also have great advantages. That one party can just impose the politically difficult but critically important policies needed to move a society forward in the 21st century.

Yeah.... well, I watched the speech last night, and for a few minutes there I thought I was watching Jerry Springer instead....

Calling the President a liar during his remarks to the Joint Session is unheard of simply because it isn't done. Wilson's remark exploded from him, unchecked, because it was released from a soul poisoned with hate. Make no mistake about it... that was racially motivated hate-speak. You don't scream out "You lie!" at the President of the United States from the floor of the House of Representatives in the middle of a nationally televised speech to the entire nation!!! Completely and totally unacceptable! He should have been shown the door right then.

Simple rule most mothers know... if you can't play well with others then you get a time-out.

Honeymoon's over. Now let's discover how the "new" administration handles itself under some real scrutiny. Bush had the 9-11 aftermath popularity...Obama has had his post election cigarette...now it should get good! Will Obama smell better than GWB when the dust clears? Maybe detecting a slight stench...ya think?

Sarah Palin doesn't lie. Her ego is so sociopathcially inflated that she actually misremembers things that support her version of the truth. Even though she spews nothing but hate and falsities most of the time, I don't accuse her of deliberately "lying" but I honestly believe that she believes her own crap.

Anyway, back to real issues. If the Republicans are so incensed with the economic and health care plans of Obama, they should try something insane like actually constructing ideas of their own to solve the issues. Obama isn't batting a thousand here, but the guy is trying like hell and you can't doubt his heart. The GOP has offered nothing other than hate, lies, and rhetoric for any of these issues. All of their arguments circle back to 'common sense' or 'family values' or some broad nebulous rhetorical crap that they can't define because they never showed the competence to put it together in cohesive form. That doesn't solve problems.. but it sure does anger voters! I guess that's where the Republican priorities really lie.

"Hey, we have no relevant ideas for healthcare reform... but we sure can bash the crap out of illegal immigrants to the pleasure of white Protestant America! Nobody defends them and they have little means of defending themselves! It's like taking candy from fish in barrel!"

George Bush sent about two thousands Americans to their needless deaths in Iraq (before a coherent plan was devloped sometime around 2007) and the Democrats still did not resort to screaming over him in speeches. But hey, tell a Republican that a single penny of his taxes is going to help a migrant worker with no insurance, rights, or legal reprsentation and IT IS ON!!!
