How about: "If the world weren't so full of scumbags, we wouldn't need the TASER." Or, from my wife (I swear to God): "TASERs. It's what's for dinner."

STILL haven't seen a single article or report which lists cause of death as "Taser." Not one. Wake me from my boredom with this threadjacking when it's over (yes, I admit I started it)

Wow! There's a post up there using the word "torture" five times in six sentences! For me, it was the fifth one that really drove the point home.

    Just a l'll ditty I found:

Emile Therien, past president of the Canada Safety Council, said no one knows how many times a day officers in Canada use the weapons.

“We need a national data bank of information on Tasers—where have they been used, when have they been used, and who’s using them,” he said.
But unlike light bulbs and automobiles, Therien said there are no standards for Taser use.

“All the police departments do is accept the manufacturer’s specifications,” he charged. “That should be [a] no-no. They should establish their own standards for their use, efficacy, safety.”

Therien, who took part in a review of Tasers conducted by the RCMP and the National Research Council, said when the alternative for police is the use of a lethal weapon, the Taser device is more reliable.

But he noted that every time an officer brings out a gun, it must be reported, yet there’s no such requirement for the stun guns.

“There’s no national databank of this,” he reiterated.

Mike Rhodes, a forensic electrical engineer based in California, said it appears more and more cases of people dying after being Tasered are piling up.

“But to be fair, people were dying before they were Tased, you just don’t hear about it as much.”

Rhodes said often suspects who are being repeatedly shocked by police officers have involuntary muscle contractions which makes them appear like they’re struggling.

“Your mind just takes over and all your legs and arms start flailing around. You’re panicked,” Rhodes said. “It’s like if you’re drowning, you don’t have any control of what you’re doing anymore.

“You flail your arms and legs around because it’s a panic state. So is that because of the Taser? Probably.”

No doubt: ""If the world weren't so full of scumbags," - no argument there!

The question is: Do ALL scumbags have the same degree of scumbaggery?
Should a minor scumbag who is stupid enough to resist and is on coke or
is mentally unstable be subject to a potential 86ing, or can we get smarter about
    restraining him?

    The Ballad Of A Scumbag

Death after Taser use shocks kin
    By Mike McPhee
    Denver Post Staff Writer

A middle-aged real estate agent who died early this morning after Denver police used a Taser on him was a devoted family man and a hard worker whose death shocked his family and co-workers.

Albert Romero, 47, died in an ambulance en route to Denver Health Medical Center after the incident in front of his house at 6100 W. Yale Ave.

Police said Romero was acting wildly and flailing around when they arrived around 3:15 a.m. Police said Romero was striking things and charged police when they tried to arrest him. Police shot him with a Taser, then handcuffed him. An ambulance was called, as is usually done when a Taser is used.

Family members painted a picture very different from the police description of Romero's behavior.

"He was a hard worker, a Christian man who didn't smoke or drink," said Romero's stepson, Bobby Rivera, 30, who said he didn't see the incident. "He was in good shape, he was a little overweight, but he was healthy. Yesterday, we were moving furniture; he was fine."

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said authorities do not know why Romero was acting wildly, and an investigation is underway.

"He loved his kids. He took us fishing," Rivera said. "We listened to (Atlanta pastor) Charles Stanley every morning."

Romero's grandson, 17-year-old Robert Ortiz, said the police version of his grandfather's behavior didn't make sense.

"He worked late into the night and used to walk his dogs at all hours," Ortiz said. "I think it was someone else who was hitting cars and causing trouble. I think my grandfather was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The cops grabbed the wrong man."

Ortiz said Romero was at the Ortiz home at 10 p.m. Sunday when he stopped by to pick up a movie he had loaned his daughter. "He was happy. He did his little dance that he loved to do, ate some posole with us and left. He was fine."

Ortiz and his cousin, J. Lee "Junior" Archuleta, 17, said Romero frequently worked into the night on his computer

and often slept during portions of the day. It was not uncommon for him to be out early in the morning walking his dogs.

A co-worker, Ron Biegler, from whom Romero rented office space, said he was a hard worker and a reputable man.

"I never, ever heard an unkind word about Albert," said Biegler, who owns the real estate brokerage Metro Brokers-Jewell Plaza in Lakewood. "Our office was shocked.

"He was an extremely pleasant, extremely polite man. He always talked about the Lord and how well his life was going."

Romero owned his own brokerage firm, Albert Romero & Associates-Auction, Realty.

Okay, well there's a point I can agree with you on, Lucas. There absolutely should be standards of appropriate police conduct where any weapon in an officer's arsenal is concerned. I do find the lack of regulation distressing, which opens the door wide for abuse of the tool. There should be a great, big paper trail following any use of force. But I still put it to you that when the use of force is required by an officer, the TASER is a significantly safer, more effective tool than a club or a firearm for everyone concerned. BTW, as far as I'm aware, all TASER uses in the City of Calgary do require a full follow-up investigation, just like use of a gun. YMMV.

    Two words: Better Training!!!!

As I've said before...I believe in technological breakthroughs.

For arguments sake, I'll drop the the concept that a taser is
potential fatal. Do you really believe that with this new tool,
cops are getting the appropriate 'holistic' training

holistic as in: "relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts"

    not

holistic: "identifying with principles of holism in a system of therapeutics, esp. one considered outside the mainstream of scientific medicine, as naturopathy or chiropractic, and usually involving nutritional measures."

    So this person is wrong?
