President Obama’s “Auntie Zeituni” won her bid for asylum in the United States because a leak about her illegal immigration status exposed her to “great risk,” according to a previously confidential ruling.

Zeituni Onyango, 58, the Kenyan half-sister of Mr Obama’s late father, was found by The Times in a Boston housing estate days before the 2008 election that her nephew won.

An anonymous federal official said at the time that she was living in America illegally, having lost two previous asylum requests. After the election, she applied again for asylum and won.

A heavily censored text of the ruling was released to the Boston Globe yesterday under a freedom of information request.

Leonard Shapiro, an immigration judge, ruled that after the disclosure Ms Onyango would “be a target if she is removed to Kenya”.
