Obama speech to students draws conservative ire - Yahoo! News

What's wrong with conservatives today? Don't they want to return to the values of the 1950's? Back when people respected the President even if they disagreed with him? Where's the Patriotism? Where's the respect for country?
If they had the technology to do this sort of thing when I was a kid we'd have been thrilled to have the President speak directly to the kids and encourge them to do better, even if it was President Nixon doing it. In this day and age we need to support and encourage our children in a positive way in any way that we can. Lord knows way to many parents have "dropped the ball" when it comes to this.

This goes back to what I've been saying about Glenn Beck, and some people in this country not being smart enough to think for themselves. Glenn Beck says that this is a way for President Obama to "brainwash" our children and turn them into mindless "zombies" that'll work for him. The only mindless zombies I see are the people that actually believe ANYTHING that comes out of Becks mouth, and the mouths of his buddies Rush and Sean.

Wake up conservatives! You can't have it both ways. You claim to be "Patriots", yet by attacking and not supporting our President, or at least respecting him, you're tearing our country apart.

First day of school? Trying to get kids into a routine, why not just send video's to schools and they can show it when it's convenient to them.

I agree with this. No matter what, the President represents every one of us and is the ultimate symbol of America. You could basically say that politics should be pushed aside and allow Obama to give these kids a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

The other day at work one of my coworkers tells me the joke: Why aren't the Obama postage stamps working properly? Because people are spitting on the wrong side.

Now I'm certainly not on board with a lot of what he's done so far, but I just think that's a separate issue. He is still the President. Dumb joke.

I've got no problem with simple jokes like that. That particular one's been around forever, you just substitute a different name. When President Reagan was shot I was in high school(yes I'm old), and the jokes about that started within hours. Every late night talk show host, SNL, comedian, etc., make their living making jokes about polititians, and they sure as hell didn't just start with President Obama.

Jokes are one thing, but when you start spreading hate, making up outright lies, and spreading fear like "Faux News" does almost every minute of the day, that's when it starts getting dangerous. Like him or not, Obama IS our president, and will be for the next 3 1/2 years. There are thousands of complete lunatics in this country, and spreading all this hatred just gets them stirred up.

Just look at Dr. Tiller. Bill O'Reily labeled him "Tiller the baby killer", and spewed out hatred constantly until some lunatic finally went and killed the Dr.

Then you have James von Brunn, the white supremacist that killed a guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. He was stirred up by something that Glenn Beck had said.

You also have this crazy woman... Nancy Genovese, "A Long Island mother of three -- armed to the teeth with an assault rifle and shotgun -- was arrested for scouting out and taking pictures of an Air National Guard base in the Hamptons, authorities said."
She had written on her Myspace page that she watches Glenn Beck, and that he had said that bases like this were really "secret FEMA detention camps".

I mean, where in the fuck does he(Glenn Beck) come up with some of this shit!?
Sarah Palin isn't much better what with her "death panel" bull-shit!

Now I'll admit that I certainly did my share of "Bush bashing", but I never made up shit about him out of thin air that wasn't true.

I'm sure that everyone living in the U.S. realizes that our country still has a serious problem with racism. And that there are A LOT of crazy racists that can't deal with us having an African American President. "Faux News" is doing everything in their power to incite them to do something really crazy.

I was born just a few months after President Kennedy was assinated, so I don't know what it's like to have our leader taken from us by a lunatic, and I certainly don't want to find out now!

This madness needs to stop, and we all have to remember that in the end we're all on the same side. We're all Americans! And we all want whats best for our country. Both sides need to "chill out" and start working together, rather than fighting each other tooth and nail. Hell, it feels like we're in the middle of another civil war!

Different to us in UK we have an unelected Head of State but I think most respect Her and Her position.
We also have an unelected Prime Minister who has made some terrible decisions and used weasel words to try and cover them up.

Depends on the content of the speech. The concept is fine, but if he promotes his programs and talking points to kids - it's wrong and borders on propaganda. It's not bad enough that schools are already dominated by liberal ideology. Frank likes to talk about brainwashing, schools are the largest brainwashing factories we have. Like journalism they lost the ability to be objective a long time ago.

For the liberals who see no problem, just turn the tables and imagine how you would feel if GWB had pushed his policies and views on your kids. I imagine the reaction would be the same or worse.

Riiiiiiiiiiiight... GWB encouraged kids to "write to the President" Parents and Teachers guide for www.whitehousekids.gov

as did his dad... George Bush Presidential Library and Museum :: Public Papers - 1991 - October

And wasn't GWB sitting in a school class room on 9/11/2001 when the hijacked airplanes hit the World Trade Center Building and Pentagon?
Like it's okay for President Bush to encourage school children to do well in school but not President Obama? How ridiculous this whole thing is!

Judging by the hints given in Frank's post I'm guessing that he and are within a month or two of being the same age. (not that old, Frank )
If memory serves me correctly, when I was a kid everything stopped when the president spoke. It didn't matter what party he was affiliated with. There was a level of respect for the leader of our country.

huge difference Susan. Bush spoke to 30 kids that day not 30 million. and asking kids to write to the president is not exactly an efficent way to fill their heads with talking points.

this is straight from the playbook - the one that obama's "pals" back in chicago like to use. can you guess who spoke these words and tell me the context??

We share the belief that education is the motor-force of revolution
do some research on the Chicago Annenberg Challenge education initiative. see what names pop up and what their objectives were.

but if you don't understand the fuss, the reason to try and influence the speech - then you probably don't have all the background information.

that's because they were not on TV every week. it was an event.

the frequent availability of air time now makes it all the more questionable to target school kids. they can see the president anytime they wish with the use of the internet, so why is a seperate speech needed??
