There must be life somewhere else in the universe... the place is just too big for there not to be. However, the chances of there being life at the exactly the same stages of evolution as us is probably minimal.
I really enjoy reading Stephen Hawking's ideas on the topic... (not that I can follow all that he says)but you get the idea...
