Here is my reason:
Why would we want judges ruling on how they personally believe? That could potentially yield very inconsistent results for very similar situations if two judges don't see eye to eye on things. Someone could get away with something with one judge while another person found guilty on the same thing with a different judge.
I don't see that as being fair or just.
