What do you think of the coming game of chicken over raising the debt limit??
It has to be raised, default is not an option. But authorizing more debt without serious steps to reign in spending is nearly as bad. Why should it be so difficult for our elected representatives to do the right thing without playing politics??
It's not about which side wins, it's about making adult decisions and doing what is in the best interest of the nation.

Raise taxes and try and maintain a big government to continue the nanny state vs. Cut spending, shrink government, and get out of everyone's way.
The arguments are going to be improverishing our grandchildren and becoming a second rate country or killing grandma and disabled children.
Like I said, it's going to get ugly and at the end of it all both sides are going to be pissed as hell at their representatives and Obama. Very few will get out unscathed.
Doug I don't want to try to control your thread, but I do want to put in another two cents here: Discussions about WHY we're here isn't going to change what needs to be done. If I read the situation right, we're waaaaaayyyyyyy beyond the blame of it. The U.S. Government has about a month to get their shit together and figure it out. The alternative will make us wish that we had problems as big as Greece.

We have something that's even worse. The Federal Reserve. Since Greece is part of the Euro system, it can't just print it's way out of debt. With Quantitative Easing the U.S. can print the fuck out of the dollar lowering it's value, and then that devalues the debt. This is VERY attractive to the current administration because the resulting inflation is essentially an across the board tax on ALL products. It's essentially a VAT. The cost is astronomical to the U.S. economy, and it terrorizes the world economy as well.
The hyper-inflation that will take place if the U.S. goes for another Quantitative Easing has the very real possibility of crashing the world economy. The effect would be as bad as if the U.S. defaults on it's debts. It just takes about six months to a year longer.
I just wish they would throw Greece out of the Euro zone again instead of blowing more money in their a€€ - I mean it's so pointless because their whole economy sucks big time and they don't even try to fix it. Same goes for Spain and Portugal, who are next on the f'd up list ...

Congress likes to spend money. The President likes to spend money. Hell we all like to spend money. It's all about spending money.
Whose money and what to spend it on is the core of political debate in America today. Without it, there would be no need for a full time Congress.
Deb ceiling is a JOKE - What is a ceiling if it can be raised every time it's approached??? Are you serious? it is simply something for them to use in their game of brinkmanship.
Government shutdown is another joke - can there not be an emergency spending fund to cover operations in the event the Congress can't agree on a budget? of course, it would be easy to write and implement, but it would take away a tool.
The why is really that simple . . . . most people are too busy saying "rah rah rah hooray for OUR side" to stop and look what's going on. Time for people to say to OUR side "WTF are you doing?" and a little "Time for you to go"
November 2010 was the start of "Time for you to go!" That is one of the biggest problems in trying to reach a compromise right now.
You had a huge influx of new blood that was elected with the primary purpose of reigning in government, turning it around, and cutting it past the quick. They haven't been corrupted by a career in Washington; they haven't learned the old way of give and take; and they don't have time to be nice, prim, and polite. They were given a mandate and bless them, they are going to stick to it. The old way is in for a change.
Is there going to be a compromise? Most likely. Is it going to be everything the new blood wants? Probably not, but it's going to be a hell of a lot more than the old blood wants to give up. This isn't about the right side winning over the left side. It's about doing what's right.

You feed a man a fish ...he eats for a day..You teach a man to fish he eats and feeds others for a lifetime(or however it goes) <- Thats how it should be done. People are lazy so lets spend money we don't have to keep up with the Jones'! Movin' on up..where Fish don't fry in da kitchen and beans don't burn on the grill no more! .... Awwwwwe simplicity is just a dieing art... I think simplicity was traded for laziness! No1 gives the time nor money to those that could infact change the world , so the stingy asses will be the death of us all! Rich get richer and well fed ...the poor get poorer and more haaaaawngry.
