.Mr Obama yesterday became the first sitting president to visit the US territory of Puerto Rico since John F Kennedy in 1961. Liberally praising the island's people and culture, he stated his support for a referendum on it becoming the 51st US state. His trip was designed to court the votes of the 4.2 million Puerto Ricans living in the United States, especially the 850,000 in the key swing state of Florida
Confessing my ignorance here(yet again) Is it a serious propostion- a vote winning exercise or both? And is the referendum for the Puerto Ricans to ask to belong or USA to decide whether to accept them or both?
