Puerti Rica the 51st state?

Mr Obama yesterday became the first sitting president to visit the US territory of Puerto Rico since John F Kennedy in 1961. Liberally praising the island's people and culture, he stated his support for a referendum on it becoming the 51st US state. His trip was designed to court the votes of the 4.2 million Puerto Ricans living in the United States, especially the 850,000 in the key swing state of Florida

Confessing my ignorance here(yet again) Is it a serious propostion- a vote winning exercise or both? And is the referendum for the Puerto Ricans to ask to belong or USA to decide whether to accept them or both?

We ... (American) then can use it as our brown skinned illegals prison .. When we rond some up instead of sending them back we ship'm to Puerto Rico after all they all look alike ....

not going to happen, too high a hurdle to gain statehood, and little interest in middle America of granting statehood to what is essentially a special interest group

What was the logic behind Alaska and Hawaii .. Apply that logic to admitting the Virgin Islands Puerto Rico and Guam to the United States. Give them the same right as Washington DC the right to vote or give them admission to the States.

I don't think the Puerto Ricans want statehood. I'll bet it wouldn't pass if put to a vote in Puerto Rico.

If not for Pearl, Hawaii wouldn't have become a state, and Alaska was a huge wealth of resources as well as a strategic point. What does PR offer?
