Obama's withdrawal plan is tantamount to surrender

Why doesn’t President Barack Obama just put us out of misery and run up the White flag in Afghanistan? Mr Obama might think it is jolly good politics to withdraw 33,000 US troops before next year’s presidential election but, whatever he says about the campaign moving in the right direction, there is little doubt he has dealt the mission’s prospects for success a mortal blow.

Talk to any military commander on either side of the Atlantic – as I frequently do – and they will tell you that they need two full fighting seasons, this summer and next, if the impact of the surge strategy Mr Obama authorised in late 2009 is to succeed.

But rather than allowing the strategy to run its course, Mr Obama has sabotaged the whole operation for his own, short-term political gain by insisting all the surge troops are withdrawn by the summer of 2012. In short the American president is jeoparding the entire mission to enhance his re-election prospects.

Mr Obama is quite correct when he declares that the tide is turning in Afghanistan. The only problem is that, after last night’s announcement, it is not turning in the right direction for those of us who would like to see the military effort prevail.
    Daily Telegraph

I'd like to see them withdraw now, it's not surrender-why fight a war you've no chance of winning? not now, not in 2 fighting seasons and not just before the election. It's not just Obama the British Government seem to be playing politics with lives.

Nothing more to fight for in Afghanistan, time to pull the plug. Same with Iraq, time to come home, enough is enough already.

Surrender? It isn't surrender, we invaded them. Didn't work for the Russians, who would have thought it would work for us?

White House officials, aware of the soaring costs of the war and its questionable progress could be a political liability in the 2012 election, are said to have clashed with Gen Petraeus, who argued that with more time he could repeat his success in Iraq......

Nearly 70,000 American troops will remain in Afghanistan even after the reductions announced by Mr Obama. This is twice the number when he took office in January 2009.

thought I heard on the news, that including the 250,000+? Afghany security,& NATO, that the remaining 15-20000 taliban will be outnumbered 14-1, even after the drawdown

personally, I think we should get the hell out of there quickly, but it seems we are far from leaving or raising the white flag--lol

Not like you to sit on the fence Nikki, do you agree with his strategy and think it's the best for America?

Would you like another Vietnam style pullout where we were literally retreating? Or would a organized withdrawal be more in everyones interest!
