The key here is your father has 40 years in a Union and will have a great retirement when he chooses

    Really?

He's worked 40+ years, enjoys working, and DOESN'T want to retire. He has almost a year of sick and vacation time built up, at times he's had over a year accrued. The last vehicle he bought, he sold back some vacation time and paid cash for it.

He get's stuck working with lazy assholes that are more concerned about talking on their fucking cell phones than doing any work. They get pissed at him when they finish a job in three hours, When they think it should be stretched out to six so they can milk overtime. They go take a nap in the truck during work hours while my dad is spent dealing the other union dumbshits in tech support trying to fix a problem that wouldn't be a fucking problem if it was installed right the first time. He's often put in the uncomfortable position of having to cover for a co-worker that takes off while they're in the field and is gone for 3 hours while my dad is stuck doing to work of two.

So let's see, in his workplace, half the employees work hard, work efficiently, and work knowledgeably and are looked down on by the lazy assholes that just want to milk the system and hide behind the union in order to cash a bigger paycheck. When they complain or file grievances they get paid for the grievance, but then they get labeled as troublemakers and are told to keep their mouths shut.

Yeah, I'm just brimming over with bullshit.

Thank god for union so your dad and others like him can cash in vacation time that most non union employees don't get.

You just described most all young workers of today .. Union or not Americans are famous for their poor service and give a shit attitude.

Lastly .. It's not the union that promotes lazy cell phone talkers and nap takers, it's management they have the right to hire and fire and anyone taking a nap at work is in violation of theft of time one of the Cardinal sins that relinquishes the employee of his right to grievance. Dishonesty, theft, refusing a lawful order, fighting and drinking/drugs on the job all Cardinal sins and if you don't believe me look in your daddy's contract.

Sounds to me like management allows this behavior and is creating a riff between the good hard workers and the lazy ones.

And if it anoys your father why doesn't he go to his Steward or BA and complain?

I am in the St.Paul grocery union and must say I agree with this post!! Moab, you always mention the management not handling these issues. Do you realize management is generally union also, and usually the MAIN offenders of the type of actions Nynus mentioned? Except for my produce manager, I tell ALL the other managers how it is!! In the past they attempted to get me in trouble, but the head office likes me so much it backfired on them!! lol I call them managers by default!! They basically hung around so long, they made it to manager!! Yes I enjoy many of my union benefits, but ya know I always say how I see it and the Nynus post was SPOT on!!

Doug, I apologize if i insulted you!! Please know i believe you are one of the most well informed posters around. When I said your name it could of been billy or Nynus also but used yours. If you recall awhile back I defended Bush the best I could and now I find myself doing the same for Obama. Maybe I am too loyal to whoever the big man is? lol

IMO if unions are going to be successful, we NEED to be more efficient than none union workers!! We get paid more so imo NEED to do more with less people to stay competitive!! That is a concept that does NOT go over well with some of my co-workers. The old timers want things to stay the same as they always have, regarding the union and work. I have had too many different jobs over the years and know what REAL work is. These guys have NO clue what real work is, because they know nothing besides being at the store for 40yrs!! I was the manager of a gas station car wash - Uhaul rental and was number one in the state for Uhaul income. I was then recruited by Uhaul international to manage one of their main centers and I was then top 10 in the country for total income and was invited to Phoenix to meet the owner Joe Shone. Yippeeeee lol At first I accepted the invite then when found out we were not allowed to leave our rooms at night, I declined. lol Needless to say that did not go over too well and I left soon after. So I understand the management side. While I also understand the workers side by working in MANY machine shops and lumber mills where REAL hard work is preformed. Usually those shops were none union and workers were taken advantage of imo.

I ended up at the store for what I thought would be temporary work. I was treated like a god from the main office and soon saw why because of all the lazy slugs Nynus mentioned!! Workers generally have their own single department they work. It has been like that for years. Well I brought a NEW aspect to the situation that does NOT go over so well with them. When they whine and cry that they need more help. I leave my dept which is in great shape and head to theirs and do their job also!! lol The office saw me doing this, then made sure I was cross trained in EVERY dept!! Now they are pushing for others to do this and many are fighting the concept!! I always ask them why won't they? Are they willing to sit back and let Walmart and Target take us down because we have too many employees? They don't seem to have the answers to that. Imo if the union and its workers do not become more compliant with new ideas to save $, unions will not last much longer.

I remember when everyone was in awe of the 'Teamsters'.

When Jimmy Hoffa ran the union, the Teamsters were a powerful force; today’s Teamsters, not so much. For one thing, the union is only 1.3m strong, with 700,000 fewer members than at its peak. In the 1960s and early 1970s about 80% of freight truckers, the heart of the union, were organised. Now the union represents a mere 8% of them. The rest of the union is amazingly diverse: 64,000 airline workers, including pilots; yogurt processors; pasteurisers; printers; warehouse workers; railway engineers; and even public service employees, like school-crossing guards and sanitation workers.
