"The union will stick to its traditional truculence, focusing on preserving jobs rather than maximizing profits and share price."
Well now, how about them cherry pickins. There was a bit more above and below that little snippet that creates a more optimistic impression and that snippet does not qualify your assertion that they "stole" the company.

Some industry experts predict that the union, far more than before, will help management increase profitability — with the goal of pushing up the automakers’ stock prices. A higher share price could mean billions more for the retirees’ health plan, helping to ensure ample funding for decades to come.

But other experts say the union will stick to its traditional truculence, focusing on preserving jobs rather than maximizing profits and share price. As evidence, these experts point to the union’s recent, successful campaign, directed at G.M. and the Obama administration, to prevent the automaker from importing small cars from China, a move that would have increased G.M.’s profits while very likely reducing the number of domestic automobile jobs.
I find it interesting that after that snippet their example of why they think unions will continue to act "harmfully" to the company is that it succeeded in keeping GM from importing small cars from China. Keeping those taxpayer dollars and jobs at home is a win in my opinion.

He's another article published in "In These Times" with some interesting details on how things played out with the auto bail out.

I dont get why its Jobs Vs Unions?

In my experience Unions do all they can to save jobs and have as many members as possible, its how they get financed. It wasnt Unions that signed up to the GAT job export agreement. And it isnt Unions who have fostered the 300-1 CEO to worker ratio, up from around 20-1 in the sixties.

Seriously if the working man earns a reasonable wage, guess what he spends it. In general he has no concept of investment or returns on capital, he gets more money and he just gets a bigger house or newer car, spending money in this way creates jobs in the wider economy. Its a self feeding cycle. Or you could just hand over all your cash and pensions to the Wall St banksters... ohh sorry you already did.

    Fucking Unions LOL

Sorry about that, I quite like numbers but I realise they aren't for everyone.

    Congratulations to the Unions!!!

The Aerospace Machinist union successfully used the US Government to strong-arm a private corporation into making concessions. After Boeing sweetened the deal a bit, the IAF agreed to a four year contract extension, and the NLRB has dropped it's lawsuit against the company.

See how this works? Union doesn't like new non-union factory out of state, complains to NLRB.

NLRB investigates and determines that Boeing has violated workers' rights.

Boeing sweetens the contract of the union, union agrees to new terms. Non union factory still in business.

Union asks NLRB to drop complaint, NLRB complies.

Government muscle bought and paid for by the Union. The American Way!

I think govt muscle gets bought and paid for, on the whole, more often by big business and less often by labor. Looks to me like collective bargaining was successful and a compromise was reached.

    Would have appreciated a link!

Well if Boeing was doing something wrong, wrong enough for the NLRB to file suit, then for them to drop the suit at the request of the union seems a little fishy. The NLRB supposedly did their own investigation, so why drop the suit?

Oh BTW, the pay-off was a $5k bonus to the union membership to be paid this month. funny how a little money solves the problem. One word comes to mind
