This has been on my mind for some time, now. It is being written not to gain sympathy from anyone but to share one family's experience.
My mother is currently very ill and she is aware that her days are numbered. I have been able to spend time with her visiting and the subject of health care was discussed. (She suffers from liver disease). She has had occasions when she needed to visit the emergency room of the hospital. Of the times that she was there, she only saw one case where someone was denied immediate attention. It had nothing to do with insurance, but he was a minor and they delayed treatment until his guardian could be found. His friend's had dropped him off as he had OD'd on drugs. The lesson here is that no one was ever turned away because of lack of health insurance. They were taken back and tended to immediately. (It is an are of many illegals and they were treated no different.) So when you hear ANYONE from the president to your neighbor say that people are dying everyday because they lack health insurance, don't believe them.
This is a subject that I feel very strongly about as insurance is important. Until the attitudes of people are changed, it will always be a problem. No one, the government, your boss, etc. owes you insurance. Think of the people that you know and how many of them feel that the government owes them health insurance, while they go out and buy the newest and sportiest car, just because they 'deserve' it. What is next? Do people feel that the government owes them car insurance? home insurance?
Back to health care, the treatment that she receives for her illness is superior and she is your average citizen. There is no cure for it, only treatment to make her more comfortable. Again, I ask for no sympathy, only a better understanding of the healthcare system in our country.
Just one family's experience.
