I get it, you get it, Christopher gets it. Its pretty firkin simple isnt it. The big mystery is why so many other people dont get it, they must have IQs in the double digits.

I have been dealing with the same attitudes as we are seeing here for a long time. I don't bother to debate or argue about it much anymore. That $1,700 an ounce of gold may only get me a pound of hamburger but that will be more than what the no value dollar bill will get you. The only thing that gives our currency value is faith. It's not real money.

I own more than just gold and silver bullion. I also own junk silver (90% silver 1964 and earlier coins for those who may not know). They will always have value unlike the stuff that is minted now.

What's the worst that could happen if I am wrong about the dollar? At worst I own PM that always have value. Maybe not as much as I like but some none the less. Now what if I'm right about the dollar becoming worthless? I believe that I have something that will bridge the gap until there is a revaluing and/or a new currency issued.

Nothing wrong with owning gold or silver stock.

I may be way off base here, but if the dollar goes to zero the world goes tribal for quite some time, we'll see Wall Street bankers hanging from buildings and politicians burned at the stake, it'll be brutal for a while. The military will be fractured at best offering no protection to the powers that be today. Yup, I'm simply an old hillbilly with a well stocked arms locker just in case. Crazy thoughts...maybe, but IMO this freight train is coming down the tracks.

Good for you, there's nothing wrong with just in case.

I think the whole subject is really interesting. Who knows how the next few years/decade even are going to play out? I see as most likely a creeping crash of the Dollar, deflation which we've seen to some extent in the economy followed by some pretty harsh yoy inflation as commodity prices eventually show up throughout the RPI.

In such an environment forget stocks as PE ratios could go as low as 4 on Western exchanges, Bonds are already in a bubble paying negative real rates, real estate has no fuel available to push prices and requires maintenance and non defaulting tenants. So you are left with PMs as a store of value. Silver IMO looks like a good bet going forward and should outperform Gold in the medium term.

To be fair to moab Gold and silver to some extent arent investments as such, but a convenient way to cash out or take your chips off the table using something other than a paper asset that relies on confidence to work.

What do you call it when someone comes up with good little trick to enrich themselves which relies on confidence to work? im sure there's a name for it.

i tend to agree with sky - if the economy were to collapse things far more basic than gold or silver will have the highest value. food, water and a way to protect it will be most in demand.

however, i agree with MF that at worst there will be a slow decline rather than a collapse. the powers that be will use every trick at their disposal to protect their own assets which are tied to avoiding a collapse.

like it or not we have the system that has been created over time, and changing it will be painful for billions of people.

perhaps what really needs to change is our perception of value and self worth.
what matters most in life is honesty. it's never wrong to do the right thing.

Oh no doubt it could get real ugly. I have even read some who think it could splinter this country into smaller ones. I don't think that would happen and is a bit extreme. I also am trying to build up a three to six month supply of dry and canned goods. Again I know that makes me sound crazy but as long as it is what I use and eat what's the harm.
