Libya: House of Representatives rebukes Barack Obama but won't halt funds
A defiant U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Friday to deny President Barack Obama the authority to wage war against Libya.

US Speaker of the House John Boehner criticizes the Obama administration's policy towards Libya, saying that the President lacked Congressional approval

12:52AM BST 25 Jun 2011

But Republicans fell short in an effort to actually cut off funds for the operation in a constitutional showdown reflecting both political differences and unease over American involvement.

In a repudiation of their commander in chief, House members rejected a measure to authorise the Libya mission for a year while prohibiting U.S. ground forces in the North African nation, a resolution Obama had said he would welcome.

The vote was 295-123 with 70 Democrats abandoning the president just one day after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had made an unusual appeal to rank-and-file members. A Senate committee is to consider the same resolution next Tuesday and is expected to support it, raising the prospect of conflicting messages from Congress.

Friday's votes showed lawmakers' concerns about an open-ended U.S. commitment to a civil war between Col Moammar Gaddafi and rebel forces looking to oust him – as well as growing weariness among Americans with drawn-out conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In addition, the resounding number rejecting the authority resolution was a clear sign of anger toward the president for failing to seek congressional consent for the operation within 60 days, as stated in the 1973 War Powers Resolution. Republicans and Democrats argued that Obama had run roughshod over the Constitution, ignoring the authority of the legislative branch that the founding fathers had insisted has the power to declare war. ...A frustrated House voted earlier this month to rebuke Obama for failing to provide a "compelling rationale" for the Libyan mission and for launching U.S. military forces without congressional approval.

Couldn't edit title. He's a warmonger and people, apart from his blinkered adoring fans here are beginning to see it.

Well all I know is the Libyans need us...them as well as many of our allies and partners could be endangerd if we don't help.Gaddafi is a crazy and bad man...as of march I read over 8000 innocent lives were claimed due to this uprising. Obama said humanitarian assistance needed to be allowed to reach the people of Libya and if Gaddafi wouldn't let us..then military action would need to take place. I hate war as much as any1.... I just think it's sad libyans call for help and the herO gets called a warmonger if he does it. If we don't help our allies what message are we sending to all of our allies..we talk a talk but don't walk the walk? Just my O.

^^^ The Libyans in the capital(where are innocent mothers and children are being killed by NATO bombs) the people are mainly pro-Gadaffi. The uprising is mainly Al-queda led(although they hide that) and the rebels have tortured and killed thousands. There are far more being killed in Syria where nothing is done by NATO. The majority in Bahrain called for help and in return got Saudi Arabian armed forces.
Doesn't it make you wonder why so many Democrats don't think he's a hero. Before you think I'm just having a go at your hero, the UK and France were all for it and I condemned it here even before your hero ignored the laws of your constitution to join in.
Qatar has publicly supported Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear technology. [1] Qatar hosts one of the largest American bases in the Middle East, Al Udeid Air Base, but it has rejected U.N. Security Council resolutions against Iran for its nuclear program.[2] According to Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jasim in an April 2008 joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, sanctions against Iran and its nuclear program are counterproductive.
Iran and Qatar have made pledges over the past few years to further develop their economic relationship, most specifically their oil and gas cooperation both within and outside of OPEC
Qatar — Friendly to Iran even as it serves as a base for the American military, Qatar has long had one of the most creative foreign policies in this unstable region. But now, by sending its tiny air force to fly missions over Libya and granting other critical aid to the Libyan rebels in their fight for freedom and democracy, this very rich Persian Gulf emirate is playing a more ambitious and potentially more risky role.

But for an absolute monarchy that was part of an alliance that supported Saudi Arabia’s move into Bahrain to crush democracy protests there, it is also somewhat incongruous.

A week ago, Qatar became the first Arab country to grant political recognition to the Libyan rebels, and its six Mirage fighter jets flying with Western coalition partners are giving the United States and European allies political cover in a region long suspicious of outside intervention.

Qatari officials say they are discussing ways to market Libyan oil from any ports they might hold in the future, to give the rebels crucial financial support, and they are looking for ways to support them with food and medical supplies. Qatar — the home base for the Al Jazeera satellite news channel, which is supported by the Qatari government — is also helping the Libyan opposition create a television station using a French satellite, to offset the state-controlled media.
President Barack Obama discussed the NATO-led military operation in Libya Thursday with one of the two Arab members of the coalition. The president met with the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, as questions arose about the NATO mission.

President Obama thanked Sheikh Hamad for supporting democracy in the Middle East and for helping bring about a peaceful transition in Libya. "He is motivated by a belief that the Libyan people should have the rights and freedoms of all people.

The idea any Government would allow a foreign funded armed insurrection to overthrow them without defending themselves is laughable.

Compare the situation in Libya to the PEACEFUL demonstrators in Bahrain who were shot at point blank range, and what does the media say.... not a lot.

So what is Mr hope and change going to do about Bahrain, nothing!!! thats what... suckers.

My problem with the Libya situation is the lie . . . .

It's being painted as NATO protecting innocent civilians from a tyrant who is murdering his own people for sport. And this is simply not the case. What it is is blatant support of a revolution in a country whose leader we don't like. The people being killed by Ghadaffi are at war with their country's government, and are trying to overthrow it. We are taking sides in a revolution, and calling it something else.

If the President would simply do what his predecessor did, go to congress and make a case for, go before the people and make a case for, removing a dangerous dictator from power, he might get my support. But what he is doing now is half assed.

Once the case has been made, and congress has given approval (a la Iraq, Afghanistan), then he can quit being a pussy about it and bomb that fucker into the ground.

half the nations of the world "need" us. we don't have the resources to save the world. bankrupting ourselves in endless unresolvable conflicts is a bad idea that's past it's expiration date, unless you think dragging the U.S. down into the sewer with all those in need of being saved is a good solution.
what matters most in life is honesty. it's never wrong to do the right thing.

Well I did my job.... I got you talking on an otherwise dead blog post ...lmao Yall can all pat each others back for all I care.. but I think your read on Gaddafi is way off... Billy I love how you think that killing women and children is worse than killing innocent civillians... like yall would feel deeper sympathy for women and children bahahahaha ...and ur quotes were 2008? hmmmm heres 1 .... The tyrant infact has killed and endangerd women and children.. using them as human sheilds... "COLONEL Gaddafi's brigade commander son has been killed by a kamikaze Libyan air force pilot, it was claimed last night.

Khamis, 32, was said to have been blown up when the rebel airman crashed his jet into a military compound in Tripoli.

The tyrant who is in hiding in a desert bunker was devastated by the attack on his son, who ran the feared Khamis brigade of elite troops.

In sick revenge for the Allies' attacks on Sunday, Gaddafi yesterday ordered his henchmen to round up innocent women and children as human shields.

Several hundred civilians were being taken to key locations in the capital Tripoli and nearby Misrata to prevent further attacks on his compound.

One resident said: "They are taking people hostage so the resistance cannot engage them.

"They don't care who they round up but they know once the intelligence services learn there are women and children involved, then they are safe from attack."

It reminds me of April19,1775-july 4th, 1776...... upto 1789 we are libya's france in a way.
"Freedom is priceless , soon as people got , tasted it , they decided they have to see justice for what Gaddafi and his gang did in Libya for more than 40 years , for every blood shed , for every prisoner killed in Abosleem , for every abusing by Gaddafi and his gang did ."
"People in Libya got tired from Gaddafi’s actions , which international community face them as actions of Libya , ” Gaddafi is the terrorist not us , We only demand our freedom which he stole from us years ago ” . That is what of the old man told me soon as i arrived into Libya ."
Oh yeah These people don't deserve to be free from this tyrant..... as long as he doesn't kill innocent women and children ... Is that what you are saying Billy? We deserve to be free but they do not...we consider ourselves better than Libyans?
Gaddafi used Multi-Rocket-Luncher Rockets , Tanks , to destroy cities , He targeted hospitals , he ordered executing injured in their sites either they are innocent civilians or rebels , he does not care to distinguish .

Gaddafi is on his war against life , freedom , happiness and the humanity , So is the whole world will stand out and watch?
