Tough question!!! Too many are found guilty when they are not, if it is proven, dna or a witness that saw the crime , and we are talking killing some one here, then i am for it. If they rape my wife, best her up or something, i want the sob out,i will take care of it. It cost a hell of a lot of money to feel and house the the convicts, and the bad guys increase daily.

Billybob...I have grappled with the 'what if it was my family' issue and the way I see it is; Even though I would be fit to be tied, I would hopefully have enough discipline to allow the laws of the land to deal with it. Laws are what makes us different from the scum. To live in a free society, we all
have a responsibility to preserve it's laws.

Witnesses? Many people have been unduly accused by so called reliable witnesses.

    DNA? Can be tampered with.

Sometimes: Good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people. There's nothing you can do about that. Life is unfair.

Just hope the odds are favorable for the fuckwad to suffer more then you.

I'm for the death penalty...now sit down CC...and pro choice...and lean right...and I'm an atheist...and I live in the bible belt south.

The problem with the death penalty IMO are the attorneys and cops who have a need to build up their resume much larger than the need to see justice.

If my families life was threatened on my property, I'll kill them, just that simple.

dam, never thought i would say this, but you are a better man than me. No one screws with my family and i do not screw with any ones family. Some one rapes my wife, or if i had a daughter, and i can find him, adios omega. And i do know how this sounds, but they better keep him locked up.

Really this sums it all up. It's funny, because I say this when people ask me about God and if he exists, how can he let things like that happen. You pretty much answered that question right here. Life is unfair and there is nothing you can do about it. Sometimes bad things happen. We usually just turn away when it's not our own family affected. But how do you feel when it really is your family?

I would like to say that I can forgive, but I can't say that I would for sure. Obviously you never forget. If someone killed one of my children, and they knew without a shadow of a doubt that he was the killer, I say give him the death penalty. He (or she) took something from me that is irreplaceable. A memory of a child is not quite the same as having them there. You do hear a lot of cases lately of men being exonerated because new evidence proves their innocence. But typically those cases are older cases where technology wasn't what it is today. If they find your DNA on the scene, (yes, it can be tampered with.... but why would anyone do that in a case involving a child?) you can be pretty sure that you have yourself the killer. Why let them live and eat up our tax money? He killed someone. Why does he deserve to live? He killed your 5 year old daughter. Why is his life spared???

i believe in harsh punishment for harsh crimes. the death penalty is a tough one though because it is so final and leaves no margin for error. making prisons more "comfortable" clouds the issue even more. i think if the concept of doing hard time was still in favor it would be easy to be against the death penalty. but thugs who commit horrible crimes or murders who later get out and become repeat offenders make me think there is sound reasoning behind the death penalty. throw in the fact that some people actually do reform their lives and it's a tough choice.

i've been thinking about it since this thread appeared, and here is a shock - this evil conservative thinks that there are better alternatives to the death penalty, so long as stringent safeguards are in place.
what matters most in life is honesty. it's never wrong to do the right thing.

BTW...and as an aside (and to stoke a fire) most people I have encountered who are staunch pro-lifers
are big-time 'kill the bastarders". Yeah - I just made up a word. Sue me!

I say---> shove the fuck in a cubicle and throw away the key.
Gotta say I agree with most of your points Prof Lu. One bone of contention is the "pro lifers" being considered "kill the bastarders." I cannot compare the killing in the womb of an innocent soul to sending a proven killer to Hell a little earlier than he had planned. If the accused admits guilt, then I say "throw the switch, hang 'em high, give 'em the shot, etc." If not proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt, then: "shove the fuck in a cubicle and throw away the key."
