OK... So HERE'S My take on Religion. Which would include Christianity..

First off, being an Agnostic, who's studied various religions over the years, I will give you My OFFICIAL OPINION...

    "I don't know, I wasn't there 2000 years ago, 4000 years ago, or 5 billion years ago..."

I lump all religions together... I'm not about to tell you that ANY religion is ANY more or less, good or bad, logical or silly. I think that every religion has the opportunity to compel people towards amazing acts of kindness, but also the opportunity to justify amazing cruelty.

Over the course of recorded human history, NOTHING has been used as an excuse to go to war, enslave entire civilizations and commit genocide MORE then religion. From the Crusades (all of them), to the "conversion" of Native American peoples (from North, Central, and South America) The African Slave Trade, The Holocaust, almost every war in the Balkens and the middle east, 9/11... and that's the REALLY, REALLY short list...

I'm pretty sure even BEFORE recorded human history, there were wars between people who worshiped the sun and people who worshiped the moon, or whatever... (The ironic thing is, as silly as THAT sounds to most people... At least those prehistoric fundamentalists could SEE the things they believed in so much they felt the need to kill each other over.)

I also feel that religion is THE most used tool for pushing political agendas, controlling the speech, actions, and even thoughts of people, discriminating against those who look, speak, think believe, and/or act "differently", and of course raising UNGODLY (pun intended) amounts of money.

Case in point, the Catholic church in which I was raised stopped recognizing My little brother and I because our mother couldn't afford the annulment fee, after she divorced our abusive, alcoholic, womanizing father. The priest ACTUALLY told My mother, a woman who had just escaped a horrible marriage, who was going to school full time and working full time, and raising two children by herself, that little bro and I would NEVER be admitted into to heaven, if she didn't pony up $1200, she cried for days over this... (Talk about What Would Jesus Do?... If Jesus was Tony Soprano)

The latter being the reason I. Myself, became an Ordained Minister, so that I could perform wedding ceremonies, etc, for those who couldn't afford the AMAZING fees that MOST religions charge for the service. (or My philosophy is very simple, if two people love each other and wish to get married, I'll perform whatever service they wish for whatever they feel is fair, if they INSIST on My setting a price, I ask that they pay for My gas, and a 12 pack of Amstel Light. Total cost, less then 30 bucks. If they honestly can't afford that, I'll bring My own beer and STILL do the ceremony.

    THAT BEING SAID...

I think ANYTHING that provides a person with a reason to treat others peacefully, fairly, and (to paraphrase the basic core of EVERY religion ... yes EVERY religion and NEARLY every human code of ethics) "Treat others as you would wish to be treated" is a good thing.

In MY idea of a perfect world, that reason would be "because it's just the right thing to do" and not out of fear of eternal damnation, but in the end I don't really care if that reason for you is The Bible, The Koran, The Torah, The Jedi Code, The ending monologue from Boondock Saints, or because your cat told you to.
Good luck, Be well, and see ya'll round,
    D

This is from my blog The Thinking Christian:

I am growing weary of comments painting Barak Obama as a Muslim, so I decided to research the matter. Whatever one's politics, one should tread carefully when spreading rumours of someone's religious affiliation. If one did any research at all, one would discover that Obama is our brother in Christ and as such, deserves our respect. But more than our respect, he should be able to count on his Christian brothers and sisters to pass on the truth and to put down lies that try to strip him of his relationship with Christ.

Below are quotes debunking this myth and the links to full articles.

"The beginnings of Obama's relationship with the church were described in an April 2004 Chicago times article:

Obama is unapologetic in saying that he has a "personal relationship with Jesus Christ." As a sign of that relationship, he says, he walked down the aisle of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ in response to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's altar call one Sunday morning about sixteen years ago." (This was many years before he became a politician. CW)

"If Doocy or the staff at Fox and Friends had taken the time to check their facts, or simply made a call to his office, they would have learned that Senator Obama was not educated in a Madrassa, was not raised as a Muslim, and was not raised by his father – an atheist Obama met once in his life before he died.

To be clear, Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ in Chicago. Furthermore, the Indonesian school Obama attended in Jakarta is a public school that is not and never has been a Madrassa."
