    Bashing Christianity

Okay I admit the title of this thread is misleading.... on purpose

In another thread Rob has asked, rhetorically I believe, why Christianity is bashed so much in The Pit. I would assume any member here knows which side of the fence Nicci stands and Frank stands opposite. But is it really a case of Christianity bashing or is it more to do with being anti some of the sects, or some of the interpretations of the Bible (I guess the two are pretty much synonymous, but not necessarily as there are those who do not belong to a particular branch of Christianity and would rather their heart and mind interpret the Bible as opposed to being indoctrinated within a sect).

So go on... spill the beans...

And while we're on the subject of "bashing" Christianity or its followers, what about other religions: do you actually know enough about these religions to have an educated spout off, or do you welcome other people and their faiths, are you anti any faith cos of media coverage, or do you believe in the "Gods" of the 21st century money/consumerism/power?

    Well, I'll start this off.

I'm Catholic. My dad is Catholic and my mother is Methodist; they've been married for 51 years and she goes to Catholic church every week but has never converted. Both are saints basically and will surely go to heaven.

My wife is Baptist but rarely goes to Baptist Church. If we have children, they'll be raised Catholic; that's a choice we made before we got married.

All of us are Christians. We try to live respectable lives, help others, follow the 10 Commandments, etc. But each of us disagree with certain "rules" of ours or other sects. For example, my mom thinks confession to a Priest is ridiculous. My dad doesn't believe in pergutory.

We have a very diverse family. My wife's grandfather is a Souther Baptist Preacher and would condemn you if you read Harry Potter.

My oldest brother converted from Catholicism to Judaism about 6 years ago, go figure.

To me, choosing to be a Christian and showing your face in a Christian Church means treating others well, not judging others, and thinking about the consequences of your actions before doing them, along with helping others when you can.

I'm going to assume (hey it's a positive assumption ) that having family members in different sects, tolerance must have been learned to, at the very least agree to disagree re interpretaion of the Bible(s). I'd love to be party to the various discussions .

Whew, you can't even imagine some of the drama that ensues when religion gets brought up, normally by innocent children who are genuinely curious. We're a very loving and tolerant family though. lol

Bash away, as far as I'm concerned. I'm so happy to be a Christian that it doesn't bother me in the least. I just feel sorry for those who do the bashing. They lack wisdom and understanding...in my opinion.

I've studied religion in college(all religions) and continue to do so. Think Quakerism is my home- but not certain I'm 'good enough (in thought)' to become a member. Also infuenced by hinduism.

I do not consider myself a "basher", but I personally think that any religion is a scam. For example, how long has the Earth been here? 4.5 billion years. How long have humans been here? A few million years. Where was God in that 4.3 billion-year time frame? Was his 7-day affair to create everything so exhausting that he needed to take a 4+ billion year vacation?

My concept of any religion is as follows - it was used, in the early days, to keep the people in order, and to get them to do what the people in charge wanted them to do - or else.

To quote Lewis Black, 'I would love to have the faith to believe that [creationism] took place in 7 days, but, I have thoughts...And that can really fuck up the faith thing.'

Just for the record, not every Christian sticks to the ideas of creationism. In fact, I can count a whole billion of us that can reconcile our beliefs with the ideas of evolution and the Big Bang just fine!

I like black pugs and I cannot lie...

I understand that, but my only comment on creationism was the last one. My first point had absolutely nothing to do with creationism, per se. It had to do with the beliefs of religion in general.
