This week's Supreme Court decision granting corporations the right to spend unrestricted amounts of money supporting or opposing candidates in federal elections is so strained in its reasoning and so removed from the realities of American life that it would be grotesquely comedic, were its implications not so dire.
Why did it happen? Because the corporations bought the political process. And the Supreme Court decision will only make this worse because now corporations have free reign to advertise and fund the candidates of their choice, so don't go expecting them to support candidates who are in favor of the common good.
Sadly the only way to get elected in the U.S. is with an electoral budget of millions and that money is easiest raised from corporations who have deep pockets. In return they want a "return on their investment" and that's a greater role in legislation, demanding less oversight and accountability.
The Republicans are the party of the corporations and they are now synonymous with the people who fund them.
But don't worry it's all the fault of the liberals...![]()
