How do you explain Hellmuth and Doyle's 11 bracelets?.... in my opinion, you need more luck than skill, but the talent usually prevails. There is bad luck and bad beats in every game. WSOP just happens to be massive. When you play the $1000 buy ins at the WSOP its the equivalent of our $100 guarantee with rebuys. Amazing donkey play. Without a doubt, the higher limit games with $2500, $5000 and $10k buy ins, you get some real quality.

I should have clarified and said that the Main Event of the WSOP acted a lot more like a lottery than a tournament. Since the explosion in 2003, Raymer is the only winner that has gone on to become a winning player, with Hachem maybe pulling his weight using the endorsement money. Even Varkonyi in 2002 was an awful player who got lucky(his wife is better than him... what the hell does that tell you?!). Of course, better players like Ivey have a better chance of winning than the average schmo, but the numbers game is very hard to beat.

As for the three argubly greatest players having the highest bracelet counts (Hellmuth, Brunson, and Chan), nearly all of those were gotten in fields of under 500 players. It's a different era now. Maybe with the crackdown, things will get back to reality and the quality of play will become watchable again. As a spectator, I can't even sit through a full episode of WSOP Main Event poker just because the overall level of play is so horrible that it's not even enjoyable to watch. This is in contrast to High Stakes Poker or Poker After Dark, where I'm basically glued to the screen.
