    Generic Foods

When you are shopping do you save a dime and go for generic, and store brand items? or do you buy only brand name stuff?

for me its a mixture... some things it doesnt matter... others need be brand names...

    for instance:

generic Mayo tastes like shit... its bestfoods/helmans or nothing at all

cheese is a toss up.. if im looking to save a buck, i'll buy generic cheese, but prefer tilamook

mac and cheese, kraft is the only choice....

and bread i dont eat wonder white bread.. whole grain, or 7 grain wheat... wonder white is only good for toast and only when you have no other choice.... in my opinion..

    how bout you?

I have a rule. Try the generic and if you don't like it don't get it again.

lol, the only brand you mention I recognise is Kraft..

However, in answer to your question...

Generic is fine for frozen vegetables, packaged pasta and stuff like that. "Select" which is the homeband for Safeway is great for most canned stuff - Especially the Tuna.

At the end of the day I'll end up with a mixture of Name Brand and Generic

If it tastes good I don't care. Except for bread, chocolate, and dessert..... generic is all right in my book.

Generic is fine for some things as long as it doesn't have HFCS, but I prefer LOL American cheese, real butter, all beef hot dogs, sea salt, real vanilla, 2% milk without hormones and a few other real foods.

Screw it, I grew up eating generic... (back in the aforementioned black and white cans) so I'll try just about any store brand and give it a shot. Here we have three major chains, Kroger, Food Lion, and Publix. I USUALLY shop at one of the first two due solely to convenience. I've found the Kroger store brand pasta is NO different then some of the higher priced names like Berilla (sorry Italians) also there are just loads of things where it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. Try them both and see... Better that that, use that thing you're looking at (your computer) for more then porn, music, and drama, and do some research, you'll find that many store brands are processed and packaged in THE EXACT SAME PLANTS as the "name" brands.

Plain white rice is plain white rice... Period... Especially since I never eat just plain white rice, there's something always either in it or on top of it.
Eggs... I know this for a fact because a buddy of mine rents land to a chicken farm, they sell eggs to be marketed to four different stores and several "name brands" all the same eggs, laid by the same chickens... Oh and for the record, "organic" means nothing when it comes to eggs (most other things as well, but eggs especially) except a higher price tag... because guess what... They ALSO sell those... again, same chickens, same eggs...
    Chicken- See above and below.
Milk- Unless you're going specifically for something like "hormone free" and willing to pay for it, guess what, it's all the same milk from the same cows.
Processed cheese- Really??? It's processed cheese... It barely has a flavor to begin with.
MANY, but not all salad dressings- Difference between Kraft and Kroger Ranch Dressing? Price... That's it... They're bottled in the same plants. (Kraft actually shares A LOT of it's product plants with store brands) Well, that and the fact that for whatever reason, spell check recognizes Kraft as a word but not Kroger.
Bottled water- If I have to explain it... you need a remedial chemistry class.... and a boot to the fuckin head.
Salt and sugar- See above. (and I live in the town where they make Dixie Crystal sugar... fuck hometown pride... I buy the store brand)
ALMOST ALL canned and frozen veggies- Yep... you guessed it... Same processing plants as the big names.
Good luck, Be well, and see ya'll round,
    D
