Las Vegas Full Moon

So, on Wednesday, November 9th, I brought the dog over to my parent's house to run in their yard as I often do and I noticed it was unusually, I mean really crazy bright. I looked up and I hollered in the house, "Mom, come look at this crazy moon". She asked what waas wrong with it. I said, there is a ring around it. She says - that means it will rain. Its an old saying the Indians used to say - a ring around the moon means rain. I say - "No, this is more like Close Encounters".

This was not a normal ring around the moon, but a gigantic circle with Jupiter right next to it. I tried to capture it with my camera, it didn't work. It was one of the coolest things I have seen. I googled it just now and fortunately is was caught on film, but the picture does it no justice.

I wish you all could have seen it. Beautiful and mesmerizing. They say it was due to an asteroid fly by.

Thats's beautiful. I've seen this before and it's truly an amazing sight.

It's actually called a halo. The halo is caused by ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. When the light from the moon hits those ice crystals, they act like a prism and (without getting too nerdy on you and talking about angles, reflection, refraction, etc) causes the halo. It's not "uncommon"...but it certainly isn't something you see often.

Even more uncommon is the double halo. I've only seen this once and it was amazing and creepy at the same time. Someone was yelling that it was a sign of the end of the world. Lol
