Employee sues for discrimination claiming she was fired over her refusal to dye her silver locks

Sandra Rawline's hair turned grey when she was in her early 20s. She stuck with it, proudly displaying her shoulder-length locks with their natural silver streaks. "This is who I am," she said.

But it seems that who she was, when it comes to grey hair in the workplace, was not satisfactory to her Texan employer. In August 2009 her boss approached her and told her to confect a more "upscale image" to go with her real estate firm's move to a new headquarters in Galleria, Texas.

Rawline, 52, said she was told to come to work wearing "younger, fancy suits" and lots of jewellery. And she had to dye that hair – her boss even offered to do the colouring.

Quite right too! Her boss should be commended especially as he offered to do the colouring at no cost.

Be fair if you go into an office you don't want to be greeted by someone and yr scared to look at them in case they've forgotten to put their teeth in. I doubt if there's any man as non-MCP as me but you have to draw a line somewhere.

I thought she'd be pleased to be told how to improve her appearance.

I've done some volunteer work on reception but have to accept fact that people expect a lady who's done all she can to look attractive to be at reception desk. I didn't colour my hair cos if Paul McCartney can't find a decent hair dye-what chance have I got? Sloppy attitudes can get worse- one day unlooked after hair, next -dirty fingernails- unwashed clothes. Her boss may have stopped her becoming a bag lady and what thanks does he get? He gets sued! Funny old world, eh?

She was fined $1,000 for wasting the court's time. The judge said he would be lenient if she showed remorse and provided receipts showing she'd spent money on 'sexy'clothes more appropriate to the job, also on jewellry, make up and hair dye and let her off the fine. She thanked the judge for his sage advice
