What's the deal with redheads in Britain?

Is there some sort of prejudice against them or something. I've gathered over the years, from contextual references that a being a "ginger" is generally undesirable. What's the history behind this. I'm curious. I know many here in the U.S. find them desirable.

My ex-wife was a redhead and I'm sure I can't throw in some experienced input about the stereotype.

I don't know how it started- A lot of my nieces are beautiful redheads. My nephews are ginger(as are a load of my mates). It's just a joke now same as claiming all blondes are dumb.
