"For Those That Have Fought For It, Freedom Has A Meaning The Protected Will Never Know"
That's a very good point.
I feel compelled to mention that out of everywhere I've lived or visited in the U.S.(and that's almost everywhere), that where I live now has got to be the most racist area I've ever seen.
I live less than a mile away from East Saint Louis, Illinois. Which happens to be the epitome of a lower income area. In slang terms some might call it a slum, a ghetto, etc. And because the residents there are mostly African American, The majority of whites that live in my area, blame E.St.L. for everything from property values, to the crime rate. Wrongly I might add.
On the other side, the residents of E.St.L. are angry at whites in the area because of the fact that they're not even given a chance to grow or to better themselves without being descriminated against.
I used to dj in a predominately black bar. I must tell you that when I first started going in there I would get some strange looks. There were some nights I was the only white person in a bar of 300+ people. On top of that I shave my head, which thanks to the fucking natzi skinhead motherfuckers, some have a tendency to pre-judge me simply on my looks. Now at first some people didn't accept me there, until they got to know me, then I was everybodys best friend. But I digress...
There was always an unspoken tension in the air when there was a "mixed" crowd. However, right after 9/11 happened that tension seemed to disappear. It was an amazing feeling. For a short time people weren't black, people weren't hispanic, people weren't white, we were all simply AMERICANS!!! Unfortunately that feeling didn't last, but I feel it comming back again.
Barack Obama has become more than just a Presidential candidate, he's become a symbol. A symbol of "hope" that maybe, just maybe, the people of the U.S. can finally start living up the phrase "ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL".
It may be the ultimate "impossible dream" but that's the U.S. I want to live in. That's the U.S. that I want to proud of. That's the U.S. that I want to be a part of.
