At John F Kennedy’s 45th birthday party in 1962, Marilyn Monroe sang a version of Happy Birthday so sultry and smoky that the sprinklers at Madison Square Garden were almost set off.

The actor had to be literally sewn into her backless dress for a performance that poured flames on the rumours that she was having an affair with the Commander in Chief. The 15,000 guests that evening did not include Mrs Kennedy.
