Eh, it gets fuzzy. The concept of the 'average' person exists, but only in theory and not actuality. This is why I prefaced the whole thing with 'envision the average American'... this person is only a construct of theory. The whole idea seems pretty lameass, but it makes the math a lot easier.

Ah, after reading it a 3rd time, now I'm with you. I think I was reading selectively.

Here's my one and only beef with stats, help me out.

My Stats 101 professor taught us that, if you have a group of students sitting in a movie theater row and all of their last names start with different letters, how many ways can you arrange them in alphabetical order. I said 2, left to right and right to left. But she said the correct answer was 1 statistically speaking. I hate that it works like that.

That's a pretty weak question by your professor. She isn't enforcing any important concepts and is confusing the crap out of her class. I mean, technically you could come up with dozens of arrangements based on alphabetical order if you butcher the parameters enough.
