I think we are in a Depression, although I doubt if anyone in power will be honest enough to admit it. Anyway, I think you need some growth to declare a Recession over, and we certainly have not had enough of that just yet.

It is also possible to have a Recession come and go while a Depression remains in place. If I am not mistaken, we had 2 Recessions and at least one Recovery from Recession during the last Depression. I think the Recovery from the 2nd Recession came at about the same time that the Depression ended. Great Depression: 1929-1939. Very Severe Recession (sometimes called a Mini Depression): 1929-1932 or 1933 (depending on source). Severe Recession: 1937-1939.

When the 3Q growth numbers come out, the US will show around a 2% increase that will effectively end the recession. What happens after that is largely a function of politics. The GOP will want to crush any new stimulus packages and keep the economy in the dumps until the 2010 elections are over regardless of their individual economic leanings. The Democrats will probably be split between those that know more stimulus dollars are needed to generate long-term growth prospects and those that are too pussifed by angry voters screaming and waving teabags to do what they know is right for the economy.

Having that be the case, future government stimulus will probably not have the votes to survive any Congressional vote, and the chances of us experiencing a double-dip recession (and yes, the Great Depression was a fine example of one) are thus decent.

So for those of you convinced that I'm an Obamabot, I will readily turn against our president if his economic policy proves to be TOO CONSERVATIVE! ROARRRR!!!!!! Of coursem, there's the chance that Obama could have the correct policy in mind only to have it crushed by a tight Senate vote brought on by scared Democrats and zero bipartisan support.
